리그가 전통적으로 수비 축구에 강세를 보인다. 이 때문에 흥행에서 골머리를 앓는 경우가 많은데 오죽 수비 축구가 횡행했으면 리그 사무국에서 1970년대 3골 이상 득점하고 승리한 구단에게는 승점 1점을 추가하는 로컬 룰까지 도입했다. 지금도 이 저득점 경향에 대한 문제 의식은 여전히 있어서 한때는 같은 승점일 때 골 득실이 아니라 아니라 현재의 K리그처럼 다득점으로 순위를 가리는 방안도 검토했다.

그리고 이 수비 축구의 연장선으로 몸싸움이 상당히 거친 편이다. 작정하고 발목을 노리는 일명 개태클이 난무하고, 빅4 리그 같으면 파울을 불 상황에서도 심판 판정까지 후하기 때문에 밀리지 않고 몸싸움을 이겨낼 수 있는 신체능력을 상당히 중요시한다. 때문에 리그앙에서 득점왕이나 도움왕을 석권하는 선수나 이 선수들을 지속적으로 견제하고 성공적인 수비를 보여주는 선수,혹은 둘 다 해당되는 촉망받는 선수가 있다면 나머지 네 리그에서 상당한 관심을 보이게 된다. 다만 리그의 수준 자체는 5대 리그 중에서도 꼴찌라고 평가받기 때문에 팬들 사이에서 리그앙 출신 선수는 당첨번호가 반만 나와있는 복권이라 부르며 복불복이라고 평가받는다. 나머지 4대 리그 중 특히 프리미어 리그가 그 복불복 피해를 많이 입었는데 뱅자맹 멘디, 앙토니 마르시알, 니콜라 페페, 티에무에 바카요코, 탕기 은돔벨레 등 수많은 선수들이 높은 이적료로 합류한 뒤 아무런 존재감도 보여주지 못한채 필드에서 지워지다시피 하며, 이후 임대와 벤치를 전전하며 먹튀로 전락했다. 그 외에도 리그앙 출신 한국 선수들인 박주영과 황의조 또한 리그앙에서 좋은 활약을 보이다가 해외로 이적한 뒤 먹튀가 되어버린 사례가 있다.

하지만 선수 풀이 두텁고 재능 있는 선수들도 많아서 성공 사례도 많다. 비슷하게 유망주로 유명한 에레디비시나 프리메이라 리가에 비해 훨씬 주목할만한 선수들이 많고, 리그 수준도 빅 4를 제외한 타 유럽 리그들보다 높은 편이기 때문에[16] 리그 1에서 성공한 선수가 빅 리그에서 성공할 가능성도 높은 편이다. 따라서 빅 리그에서 주로 선수들을 보다 젊은 선수들로 구성하여 리빌딩을 목표로 하거나 부상 및 국제대회 의무 차출덕에 선수층이 앏아져서 긴급하게 즉시 전력감을 구하거나 가성비를 위해 영입할 때 주로 리그 1 선수들을 선호하는 경향이 있다. 또한, 리그 자체가 피지컬적으로나 수비적으로 탄탄한 편이다 보니 공격진 쪽에서 타 리그로 넘어가서 성공한 선수들이 많은 편이다. 2000년대 이후만 놓고 보더라도 당장 리그 1 출신 공격수로 로베르 피레스, 디디에 드록바, 카림 벤제마, 올리비에 지루, 에덴 아자르, 리야드 마레즈, 알렉상드르 라카제트 등이 유명하다.

Just looking at the 2000s alone, players from League 1 are famous for their performances, such as Robert Pires, Didier Drogba, Karim Benzema, Olivier Giroud, Eden Hazard, Riyad Mahrez, and Alexandre Lacazette.
