벌칸 체인지업, Vulcan change-up

벌칸은 스타트렉에 나오는 그 벌칸족이 맞다. 그립이 벌칸족 특유의 인삿법처럼 중지와 약지를 벌리고 던지기 때문에 붙여진 이름이다.

낙폭에 좀 더 집중하는 체인지업으로서 원리는 스플리터와 같다. 스플리터가 검지와 중지를 벌려 회전을 죽이듯이 벌칸 체인지업은 중지와 약지를 벌려 같은 원리로 회전을 죽인다. 그립은 확연히 다르지만 공이 변화하는 원리, 그립을 잡는 이유와 목적, 그로 인해 얻어지는 결과는 거의 비슷하기 때문에 스플리터와 별 차이를 못 느끼는 사람들도 많다. 벌칸 체인지업을 스플리터로 부르기도 하고, 스플리터를 체인지업으로 구분하기도 한다.

유래를 거슬러 올라가다보면 역시 스플리터와 서클 체인지업이 나온다. 그러므로 변형 체인지업이라고 보면 될 것인데 빠른 패스트볼과 함께 사용하면 그 위력은 배가 된다. 실제로 팀 린스컴과 같이 서클 체인지업과 스플리터의 중간 느낌으로 검지-중지를 벌린 채 던지는 투수들도 있는데, 이를 '포시 체인지업(Fosh-Changeup)' 또는 '스플릿 체인지업(Split-Changeup)'이라고 구분하는 경우도 있는 편. 볼티모어 오리올스의 투수 마이크 보디커가 처음 사용한 것으로 알려져 있으며, 디 고든의 아버지이자 스티븐 킹의 소설 모티브인 톰 고든이 이것으로 유명했다.

예로부터 로저 클레멘스, 커트 실링같이 스플리터를 던지는 투수들은 대개가 서클 체인지업을 대신해 던지는 투수들이 많았는데, 요즘은 이런 투수들의 스플리터를 이 계열로 분류해야 한다는 의견도 있다.

대표적인 투수로 '미스터 게임오버'라는 별명도 붙은 벌칸 체인지업의 원조격 투수인 에리크 가녜와 함께 로이 할러데이, 이안 케네디, 존 갠트, 윌 베스트 등 점점 증가하고 있는 추세. 국내에서는 함덕주가 즐겨던지는 구종이다. 덕분에 함덕주는 우타자에게 강한 좌투수가 될 수 있었으며 이 공이 긁히는 날에는 우타자들의 헛스윙을 계속 볼 수 있다. 최준용의 경우 포크볼/스플리터를 주로 구사하는 팀 내 투수들과는 다르게 벌칸 체인지업을 구사한다. 2020년에는 데이비드 뷰캐넌이 벌칸 체인지업을 주무기로 하여 체인지업 구종가치 1위를 기록했다.

 

 

 

 

Vulcan is the same Vulcan in Star Trek. The name was given because the grip was thrown with the middle finger and ring finger open like a greeting unique to the Vulcan people.

As a change-up that focuses more on the fall, the principle is the same as a splitter. Just as a splitter kills rotation by opening its index finger and middle finger, a Vulcan change-up kills rotation by opening its middle finger and ring finger. Although the grip is clearly different, many people do not feel much difference from a splitter because the principle of the ball's change, the reason and purpose of holding the grip, and the resulting outcome are almost the same. Vulcan change-up is sometimes called a splitter, and splitter is classified as a change-up.

There are also splitter and circle changeups that can be traced back to the past. Therefore, it can be considered as a variant changeup, but when used with a fast fastball, the power doubles. In fact, some pitchers such as Tim Lynxcomb throw with their index finger open as if they are in the middle of a circle changeup and a splitter, and sometimes they are called "Fosh-Changeup" or "Split-Changeup." It is said to have been first used by Baltimore Orioles pitcher Mike Bodyker, and was famous for it being Tom Gordon, the father of Dee Gordon and the motif of Stephen King's novel.

Since ancient times, many pitchers such as Roger Clemens and Kurt Schilling throw splitters have been throwing instead of circle changeups, but there is also an opinion that these pitchers' splitters should be classified into this category these days.

Along with Eric Ganye, the original Vulcan change-up pitcher nicknamed "Mr. Game Over," Roy Halladay, Ian Kennedy, John Gant, and Will Best are on the rise. Ham Deok-ju is a favorite pitching model in Korea. As a result, Ham was able to become a strong left-handed pitcher for right-handed hitters, and when the ball is scratched, he can continue to swing and miss by right-handed hitters. Choi Jun-yong uses Vulcan change-up, unlike pitchers in his team who mainly use folk balls and splitters. In 2020, David Buchananan ranked first in the value of change-up pitches with Vulcan change-up as his main weapon.
