너클 커브

위 사진처럼 검지 관절을 구부려 공을 찍어 잡아서 던지는 커브이다. 일반 커브볼은 엄지와 검지로 던지는데, 너클 커브는 엄지와 (검지를 건너뛰고) 중지로 던진다고 보면 된다.

너클 커브란 이름은 너클볼에서 따온 것이 맞다. 너클볼이 손가락의 관절(Knuckle)을 구부려 공을 찍어 던지는것 처럼, 너클 커브도 너클볼과 일부 닮은 그립으로 던져서 붙은 이름이다. 그렇다고 너클볼 같은 움직임을 갖는건 아니다. 헷갈리지 말자. 명칭 때문에 오는 혼동을 방지하기 위해 스파이크 커브(spike(d) curve ball)라 부르자는 의견도 있다.

그런데 단지 구사하기 편해서 이 그립을 선택하는 것만은 아닌게, 일반 커브와 구질이 다르다. 가르치는 사람마다 조금 설명이 분분하기는 하나 공통적으론 너클커브는 검지가 공의 진행방향을 막아 탑스핀을 만드는데 기여하지 않고 옆으로 빠져있기 때문에 보통의 커브보다 좀더 빠른 구속을 가지며 그로 인해 상대적으로 조금이나마 더 홈플레이트에 가까운 지점에서 크게 꺾이려는 모습을 보인다. 이러다보니 스트라이크 존으로 들어가는 커브의 단점인 공을 손에서 놓는 순간 위로 솟구치는 움직임을 억제할 수 있다.

아래 항목에 구분된 다른 커브들은 그냥 하나의 별칭 정도로 봐도 되지만, 너클 커브는 일반 커브와 어느 정도 차별화가 있는 구종으로 볼 수 있다. 베이스볼 서번트에서는 아예 커브와 다른 구종으로 분류된다.

대표적인 너클 커브 투수로는 국내의 경우 정민철, 윤산흠, 곽정철, 봉중근, 송승준, 정찬헌, 채병용, 장민재, 박세웅을 들 수 있고, 메이저리그의 경우 랜스 맥컬러스 주니어, 워커 뷸러, 게릿 콜, 애런 놀라, 크레이그 킴브럴, 코리 크네블, 잭 갤런, 맷 브래시 등이 있으며 예전에는 댄 해런, 클리프 리, 조나단 산체스, 필 휴즈, A.J. 버넷, 마이크 무시나 등이 너클 커브로 유명했다.

 

 

 

 

As shown in the photo above, a curveball is thrown by bending the joints of the index finger to capture and throw the ball. A normal curveball is thrown with the thumb and index finger, and a knuckle curve is thrown with the middle finger of the thumb (jumping the index finger).

The name "knuckle curve" comes from a knuckleball. Just as a knuckleball bends the joints of a finger to throw a ball, a knuckle curve is also named after a ball that resembles a knuckleball by throwing it with a grip that makes it look like a knuckleball. However, that doesn't mean it has a knuckleball-like movement. Don't get me confused. Some say it should be called a spike (d) curve ball to prevent confusion caused by its name.

The ball's pitch is different from a regular curve, but this grip is not just chosen because it is easy to use. Although explanations vary slightly from person to person who teaches, knuckle curves have a faster speed than normal curves because the index finger does not contribute to making a top spin by blocking the direction of the ball's progression, and as a result, they tend to bend significantly closer to the home plate relatively slightly. As a result, as soon as the ball is released from the hand, which is the disadvantage of the curve entering the strike zone, it is possible to suppress the upward movement.

Other curves in the following section can be viewed as just an alias, but knuckle curves can be viewed as pitches that are somewhat different from ordinary curves. In baseball servitude, curves are categorized as different pitches.

Representative knuckle curve pitchers include Jung Min-cheol, Yoon San-heum, Kwak Jung-cheol, Bong Jung-geun, Song Seung-joon, Jung Chan-heon, Chae Byung-yong, Jang Min-jae, and Park Se-woong in Korea, and Lance McCullers Jr., Walker Buehler, Gerrit Cole, Aaron Nola, Craig Kimbral, Corey Knebble, Jack Gallen, Matt Brash, and Dan Harron, Cliff Lee, Jonathan Sanchez, Phil Hughes, A.J. Burnett, and Mike Mussina were famous for knuckle curves in the past.
