타이 브레이크, tie break

6-6, 8-8, 혹은 10-10 상황에서 비긴(tie) 상황을 타파하기 위해 도입하는 룰. 게임 스코어와는 달리 1, 2, 3식으로 하나씩 수를 더해 가며 7점을 선취하는 방식과 10점을 선취하는 방식 두 가지로 나뉜다. 첫 서브 후에는 서브를 하는 선수가 바뀌며 그 뒤로는 2서브마다 바뀐다. 총 포인트가 6점이 되면 엔드를 바꾸며, 6-6이나 9-9가 되면 윈 바이 투 룰이 다시 적용된다.

과거 메이저 대회의 마지막 세트(즉 남자 5세트, 여자 3세트)에서는 타이 브레이크가 적용되지 않았기 때문에 6-6 이상의 게임 스코어에서는 무조건 2게임을 앞서야 경기가 끝났다. 그래서 상대의 서브 게임을 쉽게 브레이크하지 못하면 장기전으로 이어질 수밖에 없는데, 극단적인 사례로 2010년 윔블던 1회전 존 이스너(John Isner)와 니콜라 마위(Nicolas Mahut)의 11시간 5분의 혈전이 있다. US오픈은 1970년부터 마지막 세트 타이 브레이크를 적용하였고, 다른 대회들은 한참 동안 마지막 세트 타이 브레이크를 적용하지 않았으나, 2019년부터 호주 오픈과 윔블던 대회에서 마지막 세트 타이 브레이크가 적용되었다. 프랑스 오픈은 2020년에도 여전히 마지막 세트에서는 2게임을 앞서야 승리할 수 있다.
2019 윔블던 결승 조코비치 vs 페더러 경기가 5세트 12:12까지 가면서 윔블던 남자 단식 역사상 처음으로 5세트 타이 브레이크가 적용되었다.
2022년 롤랑 가로스 대회부터 마지막 세트 게임스코어 6:6에서 10점 선취 타이브레이크를 적용하는 규칙을 모든 그랜드슬램 대회에 적용하는 것이 합의되었다.

 

 

 

This rule is used to break down tie situations in situations such as 6-6, 8-8, or 10-10. Unlike game scores, there are two types of scores: one in 1, 2, or 3 to take 7 points in advance and the other in 10 points in advance. After the first serve, the player who serves changes, and after that, every two serves. If the total score is six points, the end is changed, and if the score is 6-6 or 9-9, the win-by-two rule is applied again.

Since tie breaks were not applied in the last set of major tournaments in the past (i.e., men's five sets and women's three sets), the game ended only when two games were ahead of the game score of 6-6 or higher. Therefore, a failure to break the opponent's subgame easily will inevitably lead to a long-term battle, and an extreme example is an 11-hour, 5-minute blood clot between John Isner and Nicola Mahut, the first-round Wimbledon in 2010. The U.S. Open has applied the last set tie break since 1970, and the other competitions have not applied the last set tie break for a long time, but the last set tie break has been applied in the Australian Open and Wimbledon since 2019. The French Open can still win in 2020 with two games ahead of the last set.
For the first time in Wimbledon men's singles history, the five-set tiebreaker was applied as the 2019 Wimbledon final Djokovic vs Federer match went to 12:12 in the fifth set.
From the 2022 Roland Garros tournament, it has been agreed to apply the rule to apply a 10-point pre-emptive tiebreaker to all Grand Slam tournaments in the final set game score 6:6.
